The worst final I've ever seen. Probably the worst final in the history of football ever. But Liverpool are champions of Europe once again. And Spurs come runners up when they shouldn't even be a team past the quarter finals. Both teams deserve an awful lot of praise for their campaigns. Liverpool were the better team and are simply just a class above.
Liverpool weren't great. But to be honest, they've been like this all big games this season, especially away from home. Strong defensively, blunt in attack. Salah was utterly hopeless in another big game this season whilst Mane tried and did the best out of Liverpool forwards - as he has in all big games this season. But last night showcased Liverpool's strength. Their defence. Robertson is a sensation and the best left back in Europe. Alexander-Arnold is an
incredible crosser of a ball and sound defensively. Allison is a solid keeper and Matip has been superb in Europe all season. But Van Dijk. Virgil Van Dijk. He should win Balon D'or. He should. But he won't. He's a defender. Messi will win. He's a sporting freak. He's an absolute monster. He's lightning quick, super strong, towering in the air and his reading of the game is ridiculous. He's transformed Liverpool on his own and he's a phenomenal footballer. Liverpool deserved to win this and Klopp too. He's done a marvellous job at the club and deserves massive credit. If he could win the Premier League, he would go down in folklore. Also, credit to Origi. I really like him. I think he's a really good striker and can score goals when given a chance in front of goal. Pleased he put away that chance in emphatic fashion.
Whether Kane started or not, it would have made 0 difference. Lucas wouldn't have rinsed Van Dijk. Spurs didn't freeze on the big stage. This is how good Spurs are. This is them this season. Look how many games they lost in the league. They scraped through to this stage
luckily. They shouldn't even be here. Spurs and Poch have been brilliant for the last few seasons but have gone backwards this season due to a lack of signings and their performances have shown that. The fact that they are even here is a testament to the remarkable manager that is Pochettino. They gave everything but just aren't good enough. That's why this summer is going to be massive for Spurs. Back Pochettino, revamp the midfield, which is full of overrated players like Alli and Eriksen, and get a new right back. These are the main problems for Spurs which can be sorted if Levy backs him financially, and with big offers going in for Lo Celso and Ndombele, maybe he is.
But congratulations to Liverpool. A brilliant season capped of with a deserving trophy. They will go harder next season to get that elusive Premier League. Can they oust City? Who knows.
The focus now will be on the Nations League. England will take on Netherlands next week. Unfortunately, we will have to take on Van Dijk. Should be a great game. Good chance for England to get some sort of silverware, albeit we don't know how much this will be worth in the future. But I will talk about this at a later date.
